Bethel Police Department

Two people died in a house fire Saturday in Bethel. The bodies of Charity Alexie, age 41, and Hans Alexie, age 37, were found inside the bedroom of trailer 29 that had caught fire in Bethel's Trailer Court neighborhood. The Bethel Fire Department extinguished the flames during Saturday’s early morning hours and later discovered the couple. Foul play is not suspected, and police have notified the deceased's next of kin. The bodies are being sent to the State Medical Examiners’ Office for autopsy to determine the official cause of death. The source of the fire remains under investigation.

A new federal rule will ban smoking in public housing nationwide. The notice was released Wednesday by the Department of Housing and Urban Development and will take effect in 18 months. But Alaska is looking to do that a lot sooner.

On Monday, a fire disabled Emmonak's sewage treatment plant, leaving the city unable to provide sewer service to hundreds of homes in the village.

In the city you can see time passing as ice forms on the last open water of the Yukon River. It’s this battle with the quickly approaching winter that the city is up against as it races to fix its damaged water and sewer system before the pipes freeze for good.

After three-and-a-half weeks, the Bethel Superior Court trial over whether or not tobacco company Philip Morris misled a Pilot Station man about the harmful effects of smoking has ended in a hung jury.

An Alaska State Trooper plane made an emergency landing around the Kasayulie subdivision of Bethel. Troopers say the pilot was the only one on board the plane and no injuries were reported.

A witness says the crash landing happened at 5 p.m. Friday, shortly after the plane took off. No other information was available at the time this story was published.

Children's eye development is something most of us rarely think about when we talk about raising kids, but it's enough of an issue in the Dominican Republic to prompt volunteers to travel thousands of miles to help out. Three local optometrists from the Yukon Kuskokwim Eye Center flew to the Dominican Republic to give much needed eye exams to school children living in poverty.
