Gov. Mike Dunleavy will visit Bethel on Feb. 9 to discuss issues pertinent to the Y-K Delta with regional leaders.

Gov. Mike Dunleavy is scheduled to make a visit to Bethel on Wednesday, Feb. 9. Dunleavy plans to meet with leaders of the Yukon-Kuskokwim Delta’s regional organizations, like the Association of Village Council Presidents, Association of Village Council Presidents Regional Housing Authority, the Yukon-Kuskokwim Health Corporation, and the Calista Corporation. The meeting will discuss how to address regional issues like public safety, infrastructure, subsistence, and education.

The meeting is hosted by the Yukon-Kuskokwim Regional Tribal Government, the organization founded in February 2021 that is seeking to unite the Y-K Delta’s 56 tribes into a single governmental entity.

Lower Kuskokwim School District Superintendent Kimberly Hankins also stated that Dunleavy is planning to visit the village of Napakiak to see how erosion is affecting the school and the community.

The governor’s spokesperson, Jeff Turner, declined to confirm any plans for Dunleavy to visit the Y-K Delta, citing security concerns with announcing the governor’s schedule. Dunleavy’s term as governor will end at the end of the year, and he is seeking reelection.

Correction: A previous version of this story said the Yukon-Kuskokwim Regional Tribal Government (YKRTG) was founded by Calista Corporation. The YKRTG receives funding from Calista and Calista board members helped draft the YKRTG constitution, but YKRTG spokesperson Iliodor Philemonof says Calista has no control over the organization’s operations and decision-making.
