1A and 2A state basketball tournaments begin this week in Anchorage

The 1A and 2A state basketball tournament begins this week in Anchorage, and teams from across the Yukon-Kuskokwim Delta will bid for a state title.

In the 1A division, eight teams from the region are in the bracket: four girls teams and four boys teams.

Competing from the region in the girls division are St. Mary’s, Akiachak, and Chefornak. Pilot Station and Marshall are also entered and playing as one team. In the boys division are Aniak, Scammon Bay, St. Mary’s, and Toksook Bay. Games begin at 8 a.m. on Wednesday, March 16 with the championship matches tipping off on Saturday, March 19.

Meanwhile, the 2A state basketball tournament will also be taking place. The Hooper Bay girls and boys teams will be representing the region in that league. Those games begin 8 a.m. on Thursday, March 17 and run through Saturday, March 19.
