Warm ocean temperatures caused chum crash
Today during “Coffee at KYUK” we’ll hear from the Alaska Department of Fish and Game’s salmon ocean ecology program leader, Dr. Katie Howard. This is the presentation she made about the decline of chum salmon in the Arctic, Yukon, and Kuskokwim Rivers. As you will hear, she says that warmer than normal ocean temperatures in the Bering Sea and the North Pacific between 2016 and 2019 are a likely cause of the unprecedented low chum returns the last few years.

Studying permafrost in the Y-K Delta
On the phone to join us for “Coffee at KYUK” today is Dr. Jacqueline Hung with the Woodwell Climate Research Center. She has been going out to Yukon Delta National Wildlife Refuge land near Nunapitchuk to study permafrost, and this project is now expanding. Here to speak with her is KYUK’s Francisco Martinezcuello.

Our subject on "Coffee at KYUK" today is the tuberculosis (TB) outbreak in the Yukon-Kuskokwim Delta. Joining us to talk about it is Dr. Anne Zink, the chief medical officer for the Alaska Department of Health, and Dr. Ellen Hodges, the chief of staff at the Yukon-Kuskokwim Health Corporation (YKHC).
