Akiachak tribal police recovered the body of Joseph Ekamrak on Saturday, August 17.

Mike Williams Sr. was traveling to Bethel on Saturday morning when he spotted Ekamrak’s body floating in the Kuskokwim River about three miles downriver from Akiachak. The tribal police were notified.

Thirty-five-year-old Ekamrak went missing nearly a month ago. His boat was left in Akiachak, and nearby villages helped conduct ground and river searches for him.

Akiachak Tribal Police Chief Mark Mata says that they identified Ekamrak by his debit card in his wallet, which was still in his coat’s chest pocket. He says that Alaska State Troopers took the body to Anchorage for a medical examination. Mata says that the cause of death has yet to be determined.
