Bethel fire fighters responded to a burning shed near Watson's Corner in Bethel, Alaska on Oct. 25, 2021.

On Oct. 25, a fire destroyed a shed near the Watson’s Corner intersection in Bethel. Bethel Fire Chief Daron Solesbee said that no injuries have been reported. Nine firefighters arrived to the scene just before 8 p.m. Three of them were new to the force.

“We had firefighter recruits in class that night, so we had a pretty good crew,” Solesbee said.

Those recruits got real-world experience fighting the flames. Solesbee said that the shed showed signs of a person having occupied it, and a mattress was found inside. The shed was surrounded by vacant structures.

Solsebee reminded everyone that October is Fire Prevention month. He said that now is a good time to take steps to prevent future fires.

“I just want to remind everyone they need to clean their chimneys out. They need to sweep their chimneys. Also they need to replace their batteries in their smoke alarms. And just remember, if there is a fire, get out, stay out, and call 911,” Solsebee said.
