Update: Troopers And BPD Arrest Man Who Shot Nunapitchuk Village Police Officer

Update 3/17: Daris Larson, 37, of Nunapitchuk has been charged with first-degree attempted murder, three counts of assault, escape, and three counts of misconduct with a weapon. Larson has been remanded to the Yukon Kuskokwim Correctional Center. 

Update 3/16: State troopers, working with Bethel police, arrested the man who shot a Nunapitchuk village police officer. The arrest was made in Bethel on March 16 around 8 p.m. A trooper dispatch identified the shooter as Daris Larson, 37, of Nunapitchuk. After shooting a VPO and escaping from the Nunapitchuk Public Safety building, Larson fled to Bethel by snowmachine. Charges against Larson have yet to be determined. 

Original Story: A village police officer in Nunapitchuk was shot by a prisoner on Tuesday, March 16. According to a state trooper dispatch, the prisoner escaped the Nunapitchuk Public Safety building after shooting the VPO.

Troopers from Bethel responded to Nunapitchuk and are actively searching for the suspect. Residents of the village are asked to remain at home during the search. 

The VPO was medevaced to Bethel and is reportedly in stable condition. The trooper dispatch did not identify either the VPO or the shooter.

Additional trooper personnel, including Special Emergency Reaction Team members, are headed to Nunapitchuk to assist with the search.
