In Chevak, the search continues for two men discovered missing after a fire destroyed the old village school. It’s unknown whether the men perished in the fire.

No human remains have been found at the scene, according to an online dispatch from Alaska State Troopers, but the investigation is just beginning.

Both troopers and fire marshals arrived in Chevak on March 9, the day after the fire. They are investigating how the fire started, and looking through debris for the men’s remains. For now, both are considered missing.

Chevak volunteers and the men’s families searched the village for the two the day of the fire. Both were in the community before the fire occurred, according to Chevak Vice Mayor Ulric Ulroan, and neither left signs of having traveled.

Correction: A previous version of this story misspelled Chevak Vice Mayor Ulric Ulroan’s name as Ulrich Ulroan.
