Kwethluk And Scammon Bay Have Community Spread Of COVID-19

Bethel Search and Rescue

As of Nov. 12, two more area villages have community spread of COVID-19. The Yukon-Kuskokwim Health Corporation has announced that there is evidence of widespread community transmission of the virus in both Kwethluk and Scammon Bay. These are the seventh and eighth communities where YKHC found cases that could not be linked to travel.

YKHC earlier announced that community transmission of the virus was occurring in Napaskiak, Bethel, Quinhagak, Chevak, and Toksook Bay. Nunapitchuk used to have community spread, but it is no longer happening there, according to YKHC.

YKHC’s press release said that community spread in the Y-K Delta is not unexpected, given the recent spike in travel-related cases. YKHC also said that there is no way of knowing when someone will have a serious reaction to COVID-19 that could require hospitalization or lead to death
