Akiachak Man Missing

Courtesy of Lucy Chingliak.

A man from Akiachak has been missing since the afternoon of July 19. Akiachak Tribal Police Chief Mark Mata says that 35-year-old Joseph Ekamrak was last seen by his brother in Akiachak with Marie Peter of Bethel.

Joseph is 5 feet 6 inches tall and weighs roughly 150 pounds. He was last seen wearing jeans and a grey hooded sweater with a white stripe on the front. His boat is in Akiachak and he left behind his cell phone.

Mata says that a ground search has been conducted in the village, and that another one is planned for July 24. Mata reached out to Akiak, Tuluksak, and Kwethluk to see if they had spotted Ekamrak, but no one has reported seeing him. Mata says that the village will search the river on July 25.

Ekamrak’s family members told Mata that Ekamrak has never gone missing before. The Bethel Police Department and Alaska State Troopers have been notified. Mata asks that anyone with information please call 907-544-1964.

Correction: An earlier version of this article said Joseph Ekamrak was 34 and that the boat was in Akiak.
