Moose hunting season opened on Saturday along the Lower Kuskokwim. As of Tuesday afternoon, about 50 moose have been reported harvested.
The harvest quota is 170 bull moose for Hunting Zone 1, which includes the Kuskokwim River from just below Kalskag, down to Eek, and all the tributaries. The Alaska Department of Fish and Game expects the harvest quota to be reached by Thursday or Friday of this week and will issue a 24-hour notice before closing the hunt. Hunting Zone 2 between the Kilbuck Mountains and the Kuskokwim tributaries will remain open until the end of September.
Hunters must have a permit to participate and have 72 hours to report their harvest.
