Lack Of Mice Holds Up Final Botulism Test Results

The final test results for the botulism initially found in preliminary tests on a native salad dish sold at the Cama-i Festival two weeks ago are taking a bit longer than expected. That’s due to having to import laboratory mice.

On Friday, Yukon-Kuskokwim Health Corporation officials could only confirm that the mice had to first be imported from outside the state, and then given enough time to acclimate to an exposure to the bacterial toxin.

Preliminary test results last week found one case of botulism in an adult who ate the Native Salad at Cama-i. Final results are now expected to be in some time next week. The state Health and Social Services Department also released a survey Friday for those who may have eaten that salad to fill out. In addition to wanting to know if anyone else became sick, they’d like to know how the food was sold, stored, and eaten at Cama-i.
