On April 3, the Hooper Bay Warriors won the Alaska School Activities Association 2A Girls Basketball Championship. It was a long, tough effort, but the Warriors persevered and won out over the Su Valley Rams.

Unlike other teams, who built up large margins, the Warriors had to fight hard for every win. Their first victory was slim, with only one point separating them from the Tikigaq Harpooners. That victory set them up for a match with the Glennallen Panthers in the semifinals. They enjoyed their largest margin of victory against the Panthers, seven points, which placed them in the championship game on April 3. It was another tough, tight basketball game, but at the final buzzer the Warriors had won by four points, 36-32.

The Yukon Kuskokwim region had a strong showing in this year’s ASAA state basketball championship. Of the six teams competing, half made it into the semifinals and the Hooper Bay Warrior girls brought the championship home.

There is only one thing left to say: Go Warriors!
