An abandoned Bureau of Indian Affairs building caught fire on April 15, 2018.

An abandoned Bureau of Indian Affairs building on the outskirts of Bethel caught fire on Sunday. As of 4:30 p.m., the site is still burning.

In a post to their Facebook page, the Bethel Fire Department said that it doesn't plan to put the fire out. It isn’t safe for their firefighters to enter the area, and road conditions are such that water trucks can’t drive to the scene. The department is allowing the fire to burn itself out and warned residents to expect smoke throughout the day.

This story has been updated to clarify that the BIA building was not previously a school.
