LKSD Enacts Vaccine Rules

The Lower Kuskokwim School District has enacted a number of COVID-19 vaccine policies, including mandating vaccines for a small group.

First, the Lower Kuskokwim School District is mandating that coaches and chaperones accompanying students on sports trips must be vaccinated because of their close contact with students.

Second, unvaccinated students will not be allowed to travel for sports outside of the district.

And lastly, the district will not pay for any unvaccinated staff to travel out of the region for work events like conferences. Instead, unvaccinated staff must attend any conferences virtually. Vaccinated teachers may still travel to conferences using district funds.

LKSD’s school board voted to instate these new policies during the Aug. 19 board meeting several days before the U.S. Food and Drug Administration grantedfull approval to the Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine for everyone age 16 and older.

LKSD has not mandated that all teachers or students of eligible age get the vaccine. The district is testing its students at least weekly, requiring universal masking, and quarantining unvaccinated close contacts.
