Emmonak Man Charged With Murder

On Thursday, May 9, Cornelius Benedict Jr. was arrested and jailed in Bethel on an outstanding warrant issued by the Fairbanks Superior Court. 

The Alaska State Troopers Statewide Drug Enforcement Unit personnel in Bethel were notified that a $100,000 arrest warrant had been issued by the Fairbanks Superior Court for the 47-year-old resident of Emmonak.

Benedict is charged with the murder of Johnny Rogers, which took place almost nine years ago. Benedict was arraigned in Bethel on Friday, May 10, and will be flown to another arraignment in the Fairbanks Superior Court. He faces charges of first degree murder and tampering with evidence.

Alaska State Troopers Sgt. Teague Widmier said that Benedict was arrested at 5:00 p.m. on Thursday on the road right outside of ONC in Bethel.
