Aqumgaciq John Active 40-Day Feast 5:30 p.m On Friday, July 13 At ONC Multipurpose Building

KYUK

It’s been over a month since our friend, the Yup’ik storyteller, translator, and long-time KYUK radio host, Aqumgaciq John Active died. We miss him and talk about him often. It’s comforting to still hear his voice on the radio announcing “Yup’ik Word Of The Week,” a project that continues his long legacy of working to "Yup-ify the world."

On Friday, July 13, the community will gather to remember that legacy and celebrate John Active at his 40-Day Feast. The festivities begin at 5:30 p.m. at the Orutsararmiut Native Council Multipurpose Building, also known as the Old Bowling Alley, located next to Bethel's Pinky’s Park. Everyone is invited to attend, to share stories, and to bring a dish for the feed.

It sounds like an event that John would enjoy. He was always sharing stories and tasty foods, and we’ll do the same in his honor on Friday night.

Anna Rose MacArthur served as KYUK's News Director from 2015-2022.
