ADF&G Fish Bin Returns

The Bethel fish bin is back. The Alaska Department of Fish and Game has placed the green bin in its usual spot next to Corina’s Case Lot Groceries next to Brown’s Slough.

State biologists will be filling the bin after each high tide with whatever fish they catch in the Bethel Test Fishery. The test fishery measures the amount and species of salmon swimming up the lower Kuskokwim River.

The state cannot keep the fish and instead gives them to the community. During the height of the king salmon run, Orutsararmiut Native Council distributed the fish to Elders, widows, and the disabled. That program has ended, and the fish will now be available in the bin on a first-come-first served basis.

The fish bin will be out until August 25 when the test fishery ends.
