Mark Springer is Bethel's new mayor

Mark Springer has been in Bethel for about 20 years, and in the Yukon-Kuskokwim Delta for about 40 years in total.
Olivia Ebertz
Bethel City Council appointed Mark Springer as mayor on Oct. 18, 2021.

Bethel has both a new mayor and new vice mayor. The Bethel City Council met on Oct. 18 and appointed the positions. For mayor, the council chose Mark Springer; for vice mayor, the body selected Conrad “CJ” McCormick.

Bethel is a second-class city. Under this designation, the mayor’s primary function is to facilitate public meetings. The vice mayor facilitates when the mayor is absent.

Bethel’s mayoral position was previously held by Michelle DeWitt, who still serves on the council. Haley Hanson served as vice mayor, but did not run for re-election and no longer sits on the council.

Each Bethel City Council member was also appointed to a city committee or commission seat during last night’s meeting.
