It takes an immense amount of work and stamina for a dog team and musher to make it to the finish line of a 300-mile race. That’s especially true for the last team to finish.

Not all mushers are quiet, but Raymond Alexie is, and seems to find solace in the near-silent hours with his dogs. He is an observer. Learning how his dogs behave, knowing when to push them and when to take it slow is what has made him so successful.

A man in Kasigluk has died following a fire in the village’s jail on Tuesday, Jan. 23, according to Alaska State Troopers.

The Bethel Lady Warriors were ahead of the Valdez Lady Buccaneers for the first three quarters. But the Lady Buccaneers caught up in the fourth quarter when they scored 20 points. Valdez’s Destiny Day made some last-second free throws. With 0.4 seconds left after a foul, that gave the Warriors a small window to try to pull off the upset.

For three days, the boys and girls high school basketball teams from Unalakleet, Valdez, Homer, and Bethel competed in an intense environment.

At a hearing on Jan. 16, Superior Court Judge Nathaniel Peters heard the facts of the case, including the autopsy report that noted Jane was severely malnourished and had 40 injuries on her body. The injuries ranged from fresh, to healing, to healed at the time of her death.
