AVCP Opposes State-Issued Fishing Opener

The Association of Village Council Presidents is opposed to the state-issued fishing opening for the lower Kuskokwim River on June 28.

The Yukon Delta National Wildlife Refuge declared federal management of the lower Kuskokwim salmon fishery. Under federal management, the lower river is currently closed to gillnets.

AVCP issued a press release on June 25 supporting the feds’ continued closure of the lower Kuskokwim River to gillnets. AVCP wrote, “There has been no official announcement for a federal subsistence fishing opportunity.”

U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service did not respond to KYUK’s questions before this story was published about whether federal law enforcement officers would issue citations to anyone who fishes using gillents during the state-issued opener on June 28.
