The state managed permit moose-hunting season in the portion of Unit 18 on the lower Kuskokwim was closed to moose hunting as of 11:59 p.m. Monday, September 5. The federally managed side of the season is still open.

The Alaska Department of Fish and Game issued a release saying the RM615 permit moose-hunting season for Unit 18 on the Kuskokwim, the area from below Lower Kalskag to the mouth of the Kuskokwim and all tributaries, is closed. Managers say based on previous data, they believe the quota of 150 antlered bulls has been met. The hunt began on September 1.

The US Fish and Wildlife Service says the federally managed portion of Unit 18, which is further upriver, is still open. For a map click here. Hunters with RM615 permits have until 11:59 p.m. Thursday, September 15 to harvest 90 bull moose. The bag limit for Unit 18 on the Kuskokwim is one antlered bull.

Managers say that there is an estimated population of 1,900 moose in Unit 18. Fish and Game reminds successful hunters to report their harvest within 72 hours of their catch. Unsuccessful hunters should make a report by September 25.
