The Yukon-Kuskokwim Health Corporation (YKHC) will begin offering a second COVID-19 booster shot to eligible groups beginning March 31.
Eligible groups include anyone age 50 or older who received a first booster dose at least four months ago. Also eligible is anyone age 12 and older who is immunocompromised and received a first booster dose at least four months ago. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration classifies immunocompromised individuals as “people who have undergone solid organ transplantation, or who are living with conditions that are considered to have an equivalent level of immunocompromise.” The FDA authorized a second booster dose for these groups on March 29.
YKHC encourages everyone who is eligible for a second booster shot to get one to help protect them against COVID-19, especially Alaska Native individuals. Alaska Natives have disproportionately been hospitalized or died from the virus.
“Studies show that a second booster for vulnerable groups can be lifesaving. This second booster is especially important for individuals who are more vulnerable to COVID-19, including all Alaska Natives over 50 and those who have immunocompromising health conditions,” YKHC Chief of Staff Ellen Hodges said in a written statement released by YKHC.
To get set up for a second booster, YKHC asks people to sign up online at www.ykhc.org/vaccine. If you’re in a village, you can also call 1-800-478-6599. In Bethel, call 907-543-6949 to schedule an appointment.
