Lower Kuskokwim School District Fires Former Bethel Elementary School Principal Chris Carmichael

The Lower Kuskokwim School District has fired former Gladys Jung Elementary School Principal Chris Carmichael. LKSD’s attorney, Eugenia "Jeannie" Sleeper, said that Carmichael was served his final termination documents Dec. 19 in Anchorage, where he is being held in federal custody. His termination comes a day after a federal grand jury indicted him on federal charges, but Sleeper says that the decision to terminate Carmichael came before then.

Last week, the FBI’s Child Exploitation Task Force arrested Carmichael with the help of Bethel Police and Alaska State Troopers.

Since then, LKSD Director of Personnel Josh Gill has stepped in as interim principal at Gladys Jung Elementary until Dec. 20. The district is still searching for a new interim principal to serve at the elementary school for the remainder of the school year.
