The National Weather Service plans to move away from producing forecasts locally, reduce field office hours, and move towards relying on one weather forecast nationwide. The NWS says that this will improve their services, while an employee union leader claims that it will degrade them.

Barrick Gold has been ordered to stop mining operations in Argentina after a recent cyanide spill.

Bethel City Council has voted 6-1, with Mayor Rick Rob in opposition, for the city to submit comments on the Donlin Gold draft environmental impact statement.

Keith Gordon with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is leaving his position as Project Manager of the Donlin Gold mine draft environmental impact statement, or EIS.

“Nothing changes,” Gordon said when asked how his departure affects the project. “The agency will just continue with the processes.”

What does rural healthcare in Alaska have to do with jobs? A lot, according to The Yukon Kuskokwim Health Corporation. The regional healthcare provider is opposing the Donlin Gold mine. And a big part of an anti-Donlin resolution the corporation passed last month focuses on the potential for jobs to leave the region if the mine is developed.

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has granted a one-month extensionon the comment period for the Donlin Gold mine draft environmental impact statement, or EIS.

The comment period, originally set to end Saturday, now will close May 31. The extension stretches the comment period for the more than 5,000 page document from five months to six—a time much shorter than many wanted.

Two weeks remain to comment on the Donlin Gold mine draft environmental impact statement, or EIS. Most comments so far focus on subsistence and economic impacts, according to Keith Gordon, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers project manager overseeing the over 5,000 page document.

Donlin Gold leaders are meeting with key entities along the Kuskokwim this week.

NOVAGOLD President and CEO Greg Lang, Barrick Executive Director Andy Cole, and Donlin Gold General Manager Stan Foo arrived in Bethel Monday to meet with community members and leaders on the proposed Donlin Gold mine.

The group, joined by partners and consultants, held a community forum to answer questions and present information on the project.
