The Kuskokwim 300 Sled Dog Race has announced that it will start at 1 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 7. That’s seven hours earlier than its previously-scheduled start time of 8 p.m.

No place in the Kuskokwim drainage has “anything like [...] normal snowpack.” And it’s been a decade since the Y-K Delta saw this sort of pattern of above-normal precipitation, low snow, and low snowpack.

Made one week out from the original start date of Jan. 24, the postponement is a major decision that’s been met with support from mushers, volunteers, and fans alike.

Weekend weather across the Y-K Delta is forecast to be windy with a continued drop in temperatures.

Due to a lack of snow, the race manager said that first race of the Delta Championship Series must be rescheduled to a yet-to-be-determined date.
