The May 7 deadline will change ID requirements for both TSA-screened flights and the small air carriers that serve the region's 56 villages. For residents who must fly to Anchorage and beyond to access medical care and other services, there may be multiple challenges to updating IDs.

On Jan. 2, the Native Village of Kipnuk became the second ever tribe in Alaska to receive a federal disaster declaration, according to FEMA. The first went to Wrangell’s tribal government following the deadly landslide there in 2023.

The funds are part of more than $86 million in grants nationwide to American Indian and Alaska Native communities.
