Eula David on the cangerlagpak

Transcription:

My name is Eula David, Ac'urunaq in Yup'ik, [?Essaan] in Inupiaq. I'm from Scammon Bay. And my parents are John and Mary Johnson. And I'm originally from way up there.

I've heard, I wasn't there, but I've heard these stories. Like, my grandmother was telling me about the cangerlagpak, that great big sickness, that was going around around their area how many years back.

I'm sorry that I didn't ask how long that sickenss was going on. But in the village, since they have no way of knowing. Like radio, phones, or radio stations, they didn't know. They thought that that area was the only one.

So, as long as that area is getting better, then they start to do their usual way of life. Because they thought that sickness was over. But this sickness has been going on.

I gather the stories of what I heard. I heard that those gold, those gold seekers, Kass'aqs that came around during Gold Rush. Some of them were in Yukon.

And this cangerlagpak, that big sickness, was going on in summertime. When the weather was of it's hottest, summertime. 'Cause there were fish camps, and all those tents were there.
And then, those Kass'aqs: The commissioners, or they call them marshalls, there's police, they didn't say police but marshalls, magistrates were there in this place. And then they told those Yup'ik people to clean those tents. So, they went to those tents. And it was, since it was summertime, the bodies were rotten.

And those people didn't have lots of change of clothes, especially men. What they're wearing is what they own. So, we're moving those dead bodies. Like, they would peek into a tent, but everybody would be dead. Not overnight, but how many days ago in hot summer.

So, they gather all those oozing bodies. They worked up great big hole, and then dump all those bodies into that hole. So, that's the story that I gathered from Yukon, the Yukon.

And then while I was in the hospital, there are these people that are talking about...West coast people, like Bristol Bay area. So, those were hit by this sickness too.
