Lightning Ignites Fire 40 Miles From Chevak

Lightning ignited a tundra fire on May 30, 40 miles southeast of the coastal community of Chevak. It’s one of 15 fires caused by lightning in Alaska this past weekend.

On May 31, the Alaska Division of Forestry reported that the fire near Chevak had grown to 4,336 acres, spreading west into the tundra and brush. The fire is not threatening structures or infrastructure, so officials are only monitoring it for now.
