Calista Backs Republican Sullivan, Young Re-election Bids For General Election

The Calista Corporation is backing incumbent Republicans Sen. Dan Sullivan and Rep. Don Young for the upcoming general election.

Sen. Sullivan is running for reelection against four challengers in the primary election set for Aug. 18. Rep. Young faces five challengers for his seat.

Calista’s endorsements came from its advocacy committee. Calista spokesman Thom Leonard said that both candidates “demonstrated the most knowledge and experience with Alaska Native and rural Alaskan issues.” That includes familiarity with rural water infrastructure issues, internet access, and support for the proposed Donlin Gold mine, said Leonard.

In 2018, Calista backed Rep. Don Young and Gov. Mike Dunleavy, citing support for the proposed Donlin Gold mine as a major factor in their decision.
