From speech competitions to wrestling to Christmas bazaars, there’s a lot happening in the Lower Kuskokwim School District this week. Here to tell us about it are Student Correspondents with a new, weekly newscast produced in partnership with LKSD and KYUK. Bethel Regional High School Juniors Hunter Carter and Klajvis Pellumbi have this week’s update.

Carter: There was a High School speech contest this week at Bethel Regional High School. Students from the Lower Kuskokwim School District prepared speeches on various topics. Winners of the English competition will deliver their speeches at the State competition in Anchorage, Alaska, competing with other schools from around the state, while the Yup’ik speakers will compete in an all-indigenous language competition in Fairbanks.

Eleventh-grader Jacob Sipary of Napaskiak won first in Expository Speaking for his original speech on climate change in rural Alaska on December 13, 2017 at the LKSD Speech Contest.

Carter: Students from Bethel Regional High School will be traveling for multiple sporting events this weekend. The BRHS boys and girls basketball varsity teams will be going to Sitka for their first tournament of the season. Twenty-one students from the Bethel Regional High School wrestling program will be flying to Anchorage on Thursday, December 14 for the state wrestling championship. Good luck at State, Warriors!

Pellumbi: Nightmute will be hosting a four-on-four basketball tournament on December 15 and 16 from 5 to 9 p.m. Admission is $2 a person and all proceeds will go towards the student activities fund.

Carter: The students at Kwethluk will be hosting a community Mix Six volleyball tournament on Saturday. This event hopes to raise money for the senior class, who will be organizing the event and serving as referees for the matches.

Pellumbi: Hey Hunter, did you know that Christmas is just around the corner?

Carter: I sure did. Are you planning on buying me a present?

Pellumbi: I haven’t bought one for you yet. But! If I were to buy you something I would pick it up this weekend at the Annual Christmas Bazaar in Kongiganak. There will be local crafts, beading, fur items, and crochet. The Student Council will sell popcorn, and they guarantee there will be plenty of coffee.

Carter: I’m Hunter.

Pellumbi: I’m Klajvis.

Carter: And that’s what it is, from LKSD.
