The Mulchatna Caribou Herd is half the size it was five years ago, and hunting the animals is closed to preserve the herd. New data shows brucellosis, a highly contagious bacteria that causes lameness and miscarriages, has infected the herd, and could make it harder for the caribou to bounce back. KYUK talks with Alaska Department of Fish and Game Wildlife Veterinarian Dr. Kimberlee Beckmen, who is researching the bacteria’s impact on the caribou.
