No School Friday For Most Bethel Schools

On Friday, November 10, there will be no school for most of Bethel’s students due to teacher in-services. Schools closed in Bethel include Mikelnguut Elitnaurviat, Ayaprun Elitnaurvik, Gladys Jung Elementary, Bethel Regional High School, and Lower Kuskokwim School District Preschools.

Bethel Regional High School’s own Lynn Mellor is this year’s Lower Kuskokwim School District Teacher of the Year. KYUK caught up with the English teacher in her classroom this week to find out what it takes to earn the distinguished title.

 

 


Lower Kuskokwim School District Board Officers Sworn In

New school board member Raymond "Thor" Williams and incumbent Clarence Daniel, both from Bethel, took their oaths of office Friday at a meeting of the Lower Kuskokwim School District Board.

It is time for teachers in Bethel schools to have their in-service training again, and there will be some schedule changes this week because of it.  

Susan Murphy served on the LKSD Board for 12 years. She decided not to seek reelection this term and is pictured here at the Bethel Cultural Center on October 4, 2017.

Susan Murphy will step down as the Lower Kuskokwim School District’s board chair this month. Murphy served on the board for 12 years, and will be replaced by newly elected City Councilman Raymond “Thor” Williams. KYUK sat down with Murphy in her home last week.

Unofficial returns from the Lower Kuskokwim School District Board election show incumbent Clarence Daniel holding onto Seat H for another three-year term, and a newly elected City Council member replacing Susan Murphy, who has left Seat E. Raymond "Thor" Williams won two elections Tuesday and will serve on both the School Board and Bethel City Council, according to unofficial results.

As Susan Murphy steps down as Chair of the Lower Kuskokwim School District Board this October, two candidates have stepped up to fill her seat. KYUK spoke with Raymond "Thor" Williams and Mark Jones about why they’re running for Seat E on the LKSD Board.

On Tuesday, two very experienced candidates will face off for Seat H on the Lower Kuskokwim School District School Board. Retired teacher Michael Husa is challenging incumbent Clarence Daniel.

On the ballot for the Bethel Elections on October 3 will be candidates for the Bethel Advisory School Board. This board advises the Bethel schools and the Lower Kuskokwim School District.

Mike Hoffman New Yuut Elitnaurviat Executive Director

Mike Hoffman has been appointed the new Executive Director at the Yuut Elitnaurviat vocational training center.

Bethel’s own Mike Hoffman has been appointed the new Executive Director of Yuut Elitnaurviat. Hoffman replaces Dennis Dishion, who will go back to teaching full time at Yuut. Hoffman comes to the position with a background in aviation and many years working for the Association of Village Council Presidents Inc., most recently as their interim President. He began his new role at Yuut on Tuesday this week.
