Twenty Years After The Bethel School Shooting

February 19, 1997. If you lived in Bethel on that day, you would remember exactly where you were and what you were doing, even though it was twenty years ago.  

That’s the day Evan Ramsey took a 12-gauge shotgun to school and opened fire in the lobby, just before class started.

On the night of January 31 of this year, a Bethel man named Michael "Big Mike" Chris was found dead outside his home. At the time, police called it an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound, but his family believes that this was not a suicide or an accident. 

Kalskag Man Arrested On Multiple Charges

Kenneth Morgan Jr., age 30, was arrested Saturday morning in Lower Kalskag for domestic violence assault, reckless endangerment, endangering the welfare of a child, and assaulting a police officer while resisting arrest.

On Thursday at the Bethel Courthouse, Dale Thomas Fancyboy was sentenced to five years in prison for theft and assault after being convicted of breaking into a jail, holding guards at gunpoint, and then stealing a snowmobile to escape. This sentence comes after the presiding judge rejected a deal that would have let Fancyboy out with half the time and more probation. The judge has also taken a dim view of earlier plea deals.

On Thursday, Dale Thomas Fancyboy faces a sentencing hearing for crimes ranging from stealing to breaking people out of jail. 

Alaska State Troopers

A 62-year-old man from Kwethluk has been arrested for sexual assault. On Friday, Alaska State Troopers arrested Chris Alexie for one count of assault and for two counts of sexual assault. Troopers made the arrest after receiving a report from the village. During the investigation, another person steped forward to accuse Alexie of sexually assaulting her as well. Troopers believe there may be others and are asking anyone who would like to report that they were sexually assaulted by Alexie to contact them at 907-543-2294.

On Thursday, the Bethel Superior Court concluded the case of Daniel Misner, a Bethel man who fired a gun at Bethel resident Charlie Smith last year on a public street.  

Daniel Misner To Be Sentenced

A man who fired shots at another man in a Bethel neighborhood is being sentenced this morning at the Bethel Courthouse.

Alaska Court System

Judge Michael A. MacDonald has been reappointed as a Superior Court judge in the Fourth Judicial District, which includes Bethel. Chief Justice Craig Stowers of the Alaska Supreme Court announced the decision in a press release.

Alaska State Troopers

One after another, Alaska State Troopers received reports of a rash of burglaries in Emmonak on Sunday. The door to the Emmonak Clinic was damaged and a window at the Ryan Air office was broken, as was the the door to its warehouse. The door to the airport's Department of Transportation building was also broken into, and its garage door damaged. Troopers are investigating the incidents and ask anyone with information to contact them at 907-949-1300.
