Zulkosky Heads To General Election After Primary Win In Preliminary Results

Katie Basile

The post has been updated with the most current numbers.

Rep. Tiffany Zulkosky, a Bethel Democrat, is the sole candidate running for House District 38 in the Alaska state primary. By Aug.19, with 90% of the precincts reporting, Zulkosky had netted 995 votes. Zulkosky, the only Alaska Native woman in the state House of Representatives, has been in her seat since 2018, taking over when Rep. Zach Fansler stepped down, and then winning her election bid later that year. She is now seeking two more years.

Zulkosky could face local fishing and hunting guide Willie Keppel from Quinhagak in the general election if he gathers enough signatures by then. Keppel has filed for House District 38, which represents the Kuskokwim Delta, including Bethel, as part of the Veterans Party.

Meanwhile in the congressional race, Sen. Dan Sullivan, the only Republican candidate, has won his state primary bid. Challenger Al Gross, who is running as an independent, faced four other candidates in the Democrat primary, but held the lead to face off against Sullivan in the general election.

Rep. Don Young once again is the Republican contender for the state's sole Congressional representative seat, fending off two challengers. Alyse Galvin, who is running as an independent in the Democratic primary, will rematch with Young in the general election.
