The Yukon-Kuskokwim Health Corporation announced three cases of COVID-19 over the weekend.

On July 31, YKHC announced that an individual currently in a Y-K Delta village tested positive for the virus. The person is not a Y-K Delta resident; they were tested in Anchorage, but not informed of the positive result until after they had traveled to the village. YKHC said that this case was highly likely to be travel related, and that the risk of exposure within the community is low.

On August 1, a Bethel resident tested positive for COVID-19 after arriving at the Bethel airport. That person is self-isolating, and all close contacts have been identified.

And then on August 2, a resident of a Y-K Delta village tested positive while in Anchorage. The individual has been out of the region for over two weeks, and is self-isolating in Anchorage.

These mark 37 cases of COVID-19 that YKHC has announced.

YKHC urges everyone to remain vigilant and practice all known protective measures against COVID-19. There is no vaccine for this novel virus. Protective measures include avoiding all non-essential travel, regularly washing hands, staying 6 feet away from non-household members, wearing a mask when in public, and disinfecting high-touch surfaces.

YKHC also urges everyone traveling into the region to get tested for the virus for free at the Bethel, Aniak, and St. Mary’s airports. Free testing is also offered at the Bethel hospital parking lot every Wednesday from noon to 4 p.m. No appointment is needed.
