Video: A Look Back at the 2018 K300

The river always throws challenges at mushers in the Kuskokwim 300 sled dog race, but this year the river was simply too dangerous.

Uncountable open holes spanned miles. To save the race, organizers devised a plan for mushers to run two laps to Bogus Creek and back on an overland trail, avoiding the river almost entirely.

Extremely icy conditions and very little snow led to one-third of the field scratching throughout the race weekend. In the end Pete Kaiser captured an unprecedented fourth consecutive victory, but it wasn't easy.

"It was extremely tough. Probably one of the toughest, if not the toughest, races I’ve ever done," Kaiser said.
