The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service has lifted its ban on harvesting black brant and cackling geese in the Yukon-Kuskokwim Delta. USFWS closed hunting for the migratory birds at the end of May before the egg laying season began. Now the eggs have hatched and biologists are reporting that the young birds have fledged, or grown feathers strong enough to fly. USFWS ended the closure on July 10 after consultation with USFWS field biologists and the Association of Village Council Presidents’ Waterfowl Conservation Committee.
