From The Town's Youngest News Reporters: What’s Happening This Halloween In Bethel

Katie Basile
/
KYUK

There are new reporters hitting the Bethel streets, and they are taking on one of this month’s largest and eeriest scoops: Halloween. A third grade class at Gladys Jung Elementary School has begun a monthly newscast called the Crane's Corner News. The crane is the Gladys Jung mascot. Each month the students choose a topic, interview sources, and work with their teacher, Rachel DeHaan, to write a script. KYUK went to the school to hear the latest on what to expect this Halloween season in Bethel.

All students: Welcome to Cranes Corner News!

Bobo: Your reporters this month are:

Bobo: Abby Bobo

Thompson: Ella Thompson

Greydanus: Aden Greydanus

Atseriak: Ashlie Atseriak

LaValle: And Ellie LaValle

Thompson: Halloween is one of my favorite Holidays to celebrate!  There are many different spooky and fun things happening in Bethel for Halloween.  Here are some of the exciting things that you and your family can do!

LaValle:  The ME Carnival is on Saturday, October 22nd from 12 p.m. to 3 p.m.  There will be lots of games and food.  There are going to be over 200 cupcakes, 500 cookies and there is going to be a cakewalk.   It costs one dollar a ticket.  You can wear your costumes and have crazy hair.  This is a fundraiser for ME school.  If you would like to volunteer sign up at ME school.  Hope to see you there!

Greydanus:  The BRHS Carnival is on Friday October 28th from 5:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. in the high school gym.   It costs 50 cents a ticket. There will be a dunk tank, dartboard, haunted house, bouncing house, fishpond, face painting and many more games.  Dress up in your costume and come on down for a spooky and fun night!

Atseriak:  Trick or treating in Bethel starts in the evening on Monday October 31st.  Go around Bethel and collect candy.  Make sure to go trick or treating with family or friends so that you can stay safe.  Also watch out for cars when you cross the road! Hope to see you out collecting candy.  I can’t wait!

Bobo: Go to the fire station before you go trick or treating on Monday October 31st.  Firefighters will be passing out candy bags, glow sticks, and candy. The firefighters want to make sure you stay safe on Halloween.  Wearing the glow sticks makes it easier for cars and people to see you.  Plus they look really cool!  Make sure to stop by before you start your night!

Abby Bobo plans to be a cowgirl for Halloween. Bobo and her classmates started Cranes Corner News after learning about news reporting in their third grade class.

Thompson: Wow, all of these events sound super fun for the whole family!  We hope you have started to make some Halloween plans.  I sure have!  Listen next month for our November News.  Thanks for listening to…..

All: Crane's Corner News.

[Halloween music fades]

KYUK: To report all that information, the kids interviewed the principal and secretaries at ME School and Bethel Regional High School. They also went to the Fire Department to interview Bethel fire fighters.

Ella Thomson and Ellie LaValle said the idea for the newscast got started after the class read a book they thought was pretty exciting.

Thomson: “It’s called School News Reporter.”

LaValle: “And then we got the idea, and then Ms. DeHaan said we should do it, and then everybody was like yeah!”

KYUK: The kids thought it would be fun. We at KYUK got involved. And Aden Greydanus saw another perk.

Greydanus: “I also wanted to get involved so my Mom could hear me on the radio.”

All the Crane reporters are going to the carnivals, and Aden says you can trust him, they are always a good time.

Greydanus: “I’ve been to the carnivals all eight years of my life. You should go to the carnival, because they’ll be lots of fun games to do, and there’ll be a bouncing house.”

KYUK: And these reporters are going to the festivities in style.

Bobo: “I’m gonna be a cowgirl.”

Thomson: “A Greek goddess.”

Greydanus: “A ninja.”

LaValle: “You know like back in time, what they wear? Well mine’s kind of pink and purple with sparkles. And you know those hats back from time? I got it, but it’s a little different. So it’s a pink one, and you just put it right here, and it’s like really lovely.”

Aiden Greydanus practices reading his news report aloud for Crane's Corner News. Students in Rachel DeHann's third grade class practice reading, writing and speaking skills through their monthly news broadcast.

KYUK: Teacher Rachel DeHaan says reporting and performing the newscasts is giving the students skills like self-confidence, communication, and writing. She says it also develops skills the kids don’t get to practice in the classroom, skills that come from going outside the school  and having conversations with adults.

Coming up on the Cranes Corner Newscast in November, the students will investigate Bethel sports.
