Deaths and hospitalizations due to COVID-19 are increasing in the Yukon-Kuskokwim Delta as the virus surges in the region.

The sixth person in the Y-K Delta died from complications with COVID-19 on Nov. 10. The individual was an Elder in their 90s, according to the Yukon-Kuskokwim Health Corporation.

That same day, YKHC admitted the 14th person into the Bethel hospital due to COVID-19, and the health corporation medevaced the 12th person out of the region for advanced medical care for the virus.

YKHC is continuing to re-test all residents and staff at the Bethel Elder’s Home every three days for COVID-19. Over the weekend, two residents and one employee at the home tested positive for the virus, marking the first cases among residents in the facility.

The Yukon-Kuskokwim Delta has the highest case rate in the state, with 140 cases per 100,000 people. Anchorage has the next-highest case rate in the state, with around 74 cases per 100,000 people.

As cases increase, YKHC has expanded its COVID-19 testing. Anyone can receive a free COVID-19 test, without an appointment, in the Bethel drive-thru testing site Monday through Friday from 2 to 5 p.m. Testing also continues by appointment. To schedule an appointment in Bethel, call 543-6949. Outside Bethel, call your local village clinic.

There are currently 218 active COVID cases in the region. YKHC has announced 1,220 cases since March.
