Nunapitchuk Family Loses Everything To House Fire

Cucuaq Nicholai

A family lost everything when their home in Nunapitchuk burned down. Luckily, the family was out of town and nobody was injured.

Nunapitchuk Village Police Officer Roman Trent Daniel was one of the first to respond to reports of a blaze at a house belonging to Nunapitchuk couple Charles and Cherylin Alexie.

“When I first got there, there was smoke coming out of the back of the house. There was a window that was already busted out due to, I guess, pressure building up," said Daniel.

Daniel says the fire damaged the ceiling throughout the building, and much of the wooden roof was completely burned away, leaving only the tin roofing.

“The house, at this point, it is still standing, but the damages within the house… it is a complete loss for the fact of fire damage, smoke damage and water damage," said Daniel.

Daniel says the Alexie family was out of town for medical reasons. They have made plans to stay with relatives in the village as they have lost everything.

A relative has set up an online donation page, and local airline Ravn Alaska has agreed to ship material possessions to the Alexie family free of charge. To donate money click here. Clothing sizes and information are located at the bottom of this story.

Daniel says the fire likely started around the diesel stove, and says the wind spread the fire around the house after a window broke open.
