So few chum salmon are swimming up the Yukon River this summer that the Alaska Department of Fish and Game has cancelled the 18-hour subsistence fishing period originally scheduled to start Saturday, Aug. 8.
The decision affects Districts 1 through 3 of the Yukon River, which includes Black River, and the communities of Emmonak, Nunam Iqua, Alakanuk, Kotlik, and Mountain Village.
The measure was taken to conserve chum salmon on the Yukon River.
