The Kuskokwim 300 Race Committee says that 13 mushers have already signed up to participate in the January race as the area takes on a nostalgic chill, allowing trails to be marked further and further out.

The mushers are: Mike Williams Jr., Mike Williams Sr., Brent Sass, Jackie Larson, Ken Anderson, Paul Gebhardt, Jeff King, Rick Casillo, Rob Cooke, Jason Mackey, Patrick Mackey, Gwenn Bogart, and Victoria Hardwick. Defending champion Pete Kaiser of Bethel still hasn’t signed up.

The early entry period for the Kuskokwim 300 ends December 15. The committee says that mushers wanting to receive a refund of their $400 entry fees need to get their applications in by then.

The 2017 Kuskokwim 300 Sled Dog Race is scheduled to begin January 20. KYUK will be providing coverage of the race by announcing racer positions hourly, giving reports from the checkpoints, and conducting live interviews at the start/finish line.

But before all that happens, the first K300 local race of the season is on December 17. The 30-mile trail is open to all local mushers and has a $20,000 purse.
