After breakup this year, spring subsistence hunting near Kwigillingok will be very different because of the pandemic. To prevent the spread of COVID-19, the village’s tribal council has put new rules in place to “temporarily disallow non-tribal members from entering the Native Village of Kwigillingok to participate in the spring subsistence hunting season till further notice.”
In addition to the regular hunting gear on board any boat, non-tribal members will have to wear face masks and gloves when entering, and until they leave the Kwigillingok River.
Hunters can still use the regular campsites, but if they need gas or other supplies from the village, they will have to phone the village offices at 588-8114 or 588-8117 to tell them what they need and get authorization to make purchases. Then they can boat over to the pump at the dock and use a debit card to tank up on gas. The rules require hunters to call the village stores and make arrangements for delivery.
