Sled dog racing season is about to begin. If the weather cooperates, that is.

The Kuskokwim 300 Race Committee is planning to host its Season Opener this Saturday, December 16. The trail will start at Bethel’s Hanger Lake and run overland for 35 miles. The purse is set at $20,000.

But all of that, except the purse, is subject to change. The forecast calls for warming temperatures and rain. Until the Race Committee has a better idea of trail conditions, details like start time and trail direction will remain undecided.

However, mushers who want to compete can still prepare. The K300 does not charge entry fees for its races, but all mushers must purchase a race mile for $100. That purchase buys entry into all K300 racing events for the season. Mushers can pay at the start line or by calling K300 Race Manager Madelene Reichard to pay by credit card at 907-545-3300.
