Even As Temperature Drops, Lower Kuskokwim River Remains Unsafe For Travel

Search and rescue groups are marking two open holes below Akiachak and one open hole at the mouth of the Gweek River.
Bethel Search and Rescue

Bethel Search and Rescue warns that river travel is not safe at this time. The Lower Kuskokwim River ice is thin and filled with open holes.

The mouths of both Steamboat and Straight Sloughs have recently frozen over, and the ice measures one inch or less in that area.

Search and rescue groups are marking two open holes below Akiachak and one open hole at the mouth of the Gweek River.

Travelers are advised to stay on overland trails and off the river.
