New address signs need to go up soon, or Bethel residents may have to pay. Starting December 11, if your house or business address sign letters aren’t 4 inches high and reflective against a “contrasting background,” you could get fined $30 according to new Bethel city code. Signs must also be clearly visible from the road.

The city is making a huge push to help residents and businesses comply and meet the December 11 deadline, and the Bethel Fire Department is set up to help. People can stop by the station Monday through Saturday from 9 a.m. until 6 p.m. to order signs from the Bethel Volunteer Emergency Services Association. Signs cost $25 each, but do not need to be purchased from them.

In a release, the fire department says that “signs may be ordered from any vendor that provides 4-inch retroreflective numbers.” The fire department will also have a booth at every Saturday Market event from now until Christmas.

The city code was updated to address concerns from emergency responders having difficulty finding unmarked or improperly marked home and business addresses.

For more information about ordering signs, call the Bethel Fire Department at (907) 543-2131.
