Napaskiak is the latest community where the Yukon-Kuskokwim Health Corporation has announced evidence of community spread of COVID-19. YKHC announced the news in a joint press release with the Native Village of Napaskiak on Nov. 2.

The health corporation determined that community spread was occurring after multiple cases in Napaskiak could not be linked to travel. YKHC informed Napaskiak on Oct. 26 that community transmission of the virus was occurring, but did not publicly announce the news to the region until Nov. 2.

This is the second time that Napaskiak has shown evidence of community spread of COVID-19 during the course of this pandemic. The first time was in June, when it became the first community in the region to show evidence of community spread of the virus. That episode of community spread ended in August, according to YKHC.

Currently, five communities have community spread of COVID-19 in the region: Napaskiak, Bethel, Chevak, Quinhagak, and Toksook Bay.
