Community Spread Of COVID-19 In Akiak

Akiak is the ninth community where the Yukon-Kuskokwim Health Corporation has announced community spread of the coronavirus. Numerous recent cases there could not be linked to travel, which means that the virus is spreading within the community.

Akiak Native Community Tribal Council President Mike Williams Sr. said that the village locked down earlier this week. He said that every village in the Y-K Delta should lock down now that most communities have cases of the virus.

On Nov. 12, YKHC announced that community spread of the coronavirus was occurring in Kwethluk and Scammon Bay. Community spread is also occurring in Bethel, Chevak, Quinhagak, Napaskiak, and Toksook Bay.

Greg Kim was a news reporter for KYUK from 2019-2022.
