City Of Bethel Bought Pumpkins For Kids To Carve Instead Of Trick-Or-Treating

Alaska Public Media

On Oct. 26, the City of Bethel and the Lower Kuskokwim School District began their operation to deliver a pumpkin to every kid in Bethel from Pre-K to 6th grade. The City of Bethel is hoping kids stay home this year to carve a pumpkin instead of going out to trick or treat.

Earlier this month, doctors at the Yukon-Kuskokwim Health Corporation advised community members that trick-or-treating would not be safe with the COVID-19 outbreak in Bethel.

The city has ordered over 12,000 pounds of pumpkins. No action is required from parents of students who attend LKSD to receive a pumpkin. City Clerk Lori Strickler said that parents who homeschool their children are reaching out to her to request a pumpkin. She said that she is crossing her fingers and toes that the city has enough for every child.
